Kemba Cofield performs in the Augusta River Region – Labor Day Jazz Weekend

NEWS ALERT – August 8, 2017

Augusta – Kemba Cofield, International Jazz Vocalist and Recording Artist – one of many special performances in Augusta during Labor Day Jazz Weekend.

Garden City Jazz will present a listening room in an intimate jazz club setting on Saturday, September 2, 2017, during Labor Day Jazz Weekend 2017. The feature artist is jazz vocalist, educator, and recording artist, KEMBA COFIELD.

Enjoy a pop-up jazz club in historic downtown Augusta during the long holiday weekend. The space will feature live classic jazz music in a listening room environment very much like those only available in New York, San Francisco, London, Paris, etc.

Other events during that weekend can be found at http://labordayjazz.com

ABOUT KEMBA COFIELD:

Winner of the “Future of Jazz Straight Ahead Vocalist” award, Kemba Cofield captures the essence of every song she sings by painting a colorful portrait with each lyric, sharing her story that encompasses her joys and pains. She eagerly leads us through a path that celebrates the past and present with sensuality and richness. Her crisp articulation shines through to her soul; and it isn’t until then, that we really meet Kemba Cofield: the internationally known jazz vocalist, recording artist, writer, composer, talent extraordinaire.

“I don’t just consider myself a vocalist but a storyteller,” she says. “If I’m talking about love, I convey that emotion to the audience.” This passionate display of musicianship has entertained diverse audiences nationwide including performances at some of the finest venues such as the Philadelphia Museum, Atlanta’s prestigious High Museum and the New York’s Historic Lenox Lounge. Kemba’s vocal skills have offered her the opportunity to share the stage with the Zapp Band, Midnight Star, Bernard Linnette, Don Braden, The Aaron Goldberg Trio, Takana Miyamoto, Rodney Jordan, Freddie Cole, Rene Marie, and other famed musicians and jazz greats.
The independent premier release of Shades of Kemba in 2005 sustained Kemba Cofield’s place in the music industry. Shades of Kemba matched her powerful resonance with her influential personality, depicting her growth into an established jazz artist. Her first project was completed with collaborations with Wycliffe Gordon, Victor Goines, Marcus Printup, Reginald Veal, Doron Johnson and Alvin Atkinson. Since the release of her sophomore album, Kemba Cofield Live in Atlanta, Kemba has had an amazing career headlining the 2008 Atlanta Jazz Festival, the National Black Arts Festival and performing at Lincoln Center, the world’s leading jazz performing arts center.

Labor Day Jazz Weekend (#labordayjazzweekend) in the Augusta River Region

NEWS ALERT – August 8, 2016

Garden City Jazz and downtown partners present a slate of activities for Labor Day Jazz Weekend in the Augusta River Region.

AUGUSTA, GA – Visitors and residents in Augusta, Georgia, will have plenty to do during the 2016 Labor Day holiday weekend, as Garden City Jazz has partnered with several downtown businesses and event producers to present a full complement of activities between September 1-4, 2016. From trolley and craft brewery tours to music events, gallery crawls to fashion demos, a block party and a rooftop soiree, for all ages and preferences.

Garden City Jazz has hosted an annual holiday weekend jazz event for six years running, but this year marks the first all-inclusive weekend. “Our team has been bouncing around the idea of incorporating additional components for some time now. The timing seemed right this year, with 2016 being designated as the Year of Georgia Music by the state tourism division. Because of our relationship with the local tourism office, we just felt it was okay to stretch out a little, “ Karen Gordon said.

To say this is a stretch is putting things mildly. Whereas, for six years, Gordon and her team have produced a single day music festival on the Sunday before Labor Day; this year, they are also presenting major touring artists at the Bell Auditorium and providing promotional support to several downtown events.

“It’s important that we attract (and provide activities for) family reunions and casual visitors to the downtown area. There are so many attractions and beautiful spaces here, and if we provide a great experience, then they’ll return…  and bring friends. We’ve got to let people know that we’re here,” said Gordon.

Garden City Jazz presents several programs annually in the Greater Augusta Area, providing performance opportunities for area jazz musicians and music students, while promoting awareness of the historical and cultural significance of jazz music.  A portion of proceeds will be donated to the James Brown Academy of Musik Pupils and the Wycliffe Gordon Scholarship at Augusta University.
